As one of Western Australia’s best kept secrets, Frankland River a wine subregion of the Great Southern is fast becoming one of the State’s most successful wine regions. With a diverse range of grape varieties grown, the region is most noted for its Riesling and Shiraz, with further acclaimed success for a diverse range of emerging grape varieties from this understated part of the world.
Take the bus to Frankland Estate, WA Good Food Guide Wine of the Year 2020 winners and one of the successful wineries from the region and enjoy a tasting experience with amazing food while overlooking the rolling hills.
Start off with a sit-down masterclass hosted by Foni Pollitt, WA Good Food Guide 2018 Sommelier of the Year as she takes you through a tasting.
After the class, make your way outside to enjoy canapes and wine tastings of your choice at different winery stations. Top it all off with a cellar door tour of Frankland Estate.
You can buy a bottle of your favourite to enjoy later or order a case to be delivered after the event!
Ticket includes return transport from Albany or Demark, wine tasting from Frankland River wineries, presentation by Foni Pollitt, canapes and cellar door tour of Frankland Estate.
Due to the cooler summer that also had more rain our harvest has had a slower start than previous years. This is has been fabulous for our vines. With the days warming up in the last couple of weeks we are all hard at work picking all the whites. We hope to be picking reds very soon but still have a long way to go. End of Vintage!
The harvest of the wine grape crop for 2018 in the Frankland River Wine Region will be completed by the 20th of April. It has been a terrific year with little rain and a fabulous cool end to the season. The Frankland River Wine Makers and Grape Growers Association would like to sincerely thank all of the Shire of Cranbrook Community for their consideration and help with keeping the smoke at bay during the past 10 weeks. We are very grateful for your understanding and efforts towards helping us to get the best quality fruit we can.
If you require any further information on the harvest or the industry in general, please don’t hesitate to contact one of the wineries in our region. So now we will head out and do our rain dancing, and cross our fingers for some really good starting rains for the cropping season.
The Grape harvest is speeding along this year with no delay between the whites and the reds. The weather has been absolutely perfect and so no hold ups. There was panic in the air when the BOM told us to expect a visit from Cyclone Marcus this weekend, but thankfully he seems happy to just keep hanging off the coast near Broome.
The Malbec and Shiraz have been the early reds to come off with a bit of Shiraz still hanging out there. Next cab off the rank will be the Merlot and some other boutique varieties such as Tempranillo, Mourvedre and Cab Franc. The King of the wine grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon is usually one of the last to be harvested so we are still expecting it will be all squared away by the end of April.
Everyone is looking forward to firstly a good long sleep, and then to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

It is now full steam ahead with the grape harvest for 2018 at the local vineyards in Frankland River, with the whites coming in first, followed by the reds in a few weeks’ time. It has been a spectacular season for wine grapes and the fruit looks fabulous. It has been a slightly early start to the vintage this year and as long as this weather holds out, it should be a fairly early finish. Expectations are for third week in April to have the final grapes in, but we will keep you posted via this publication, our face book page and web site, as well as the Shire face book.
